prefer not to : ～しないことを好む、～したくない
given : ～と仮定すれば、～があるとすれば
66% of British people feel they are in “good health.”
(66%のイギリス人が、自分は健康だと思っている。)
これに対し日本人は、47%だそうです。
77% of British people still watch conventional TV every day or several times a day.
(77%のイギリス人が、陳腐な内容のテレビを未だに毎日または一日に数回見ている。)
conventional : 陳腐な、紋切り型の(形容詞)
あまり変わり映えしないバラエティ番組とか、水戸黄門的なドラマのことでしょうかね。
62% of British people say they are not usually the first among friends to try things out.
(62%のイギリス人が、仲間の中で何か物事を一番初めにやってみることはしない。)
the first : 最初(の人)
try A out : Aを試しにやってみる
53% of British tablet owners use an Apple iPad.
(タブレットを所有している53%のイギリス人が、iPadを使用している。)
確かに妻も、iPadを使っています。
57% of Britons use social media every day, making them the second-most-prolific users in Europe.
(57%のイギリス人が、SNSを毎日使用していて、ヨーロッパ内で2番目に多い利用者数となっている。)
prolific : 多作の、～に富む(形容詞)
,(カンマ)の後の making 移行の文章は、前の分の理由付けとなっています。
確かに妻も(自分も)、毎日使っています。
53% of British people would like Great Britain to be “the way it used to be.”
(53%のイギリス人が、かつての大英帝国のような「イギリス」を望んでいる。)
want(would like) A to B : AにBしてほしい
Great Britain = A
be = B
‘the way (that) it used to be’は、直訳すると
「かつてそうであった振る舞い」
くらいの意味になりますが、纏めると、
(53% of British people) は、(Great Britain) に、 (“the way it used to be.”) であって(be) ほしい
となります。
83% of British people don’t trust the UK government.
(83%のイギリス人が、政府を信用していない。)
trust : 信用する、信頼する(動詞)
これは、どこの国も共通して高い数字ですね。
53% of British people wish their life were simpler.
(53%のイギリス人が、もっと人生がシンプルで簡単なものであればと思っている。)
86% of British people are primarily right-handed.
(86%のイギリス人が、生まれながら右利きである。)
妻も右利きですが、義父は左利きです。
